Why We Exist

Domestic violence affects millions of individuals each year. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV):

  • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men have experienced severe intimate partner physical violence.

  • Every minute, approximately 20 people in the U.S. are physically abused by an intimate partner.

But there’s another often-overlooked aspect of this crisis: the impact on pets.

Statistics show a heartbreaking link between domestic violence and animal abuse:

  • Up to 71% of pet-owning women entering domestic violence shelters report that their abuser had threatened, harmed, or killed a pet.

  • As many as 48% of survivors delay leaving an abusive situation because they fear what will happen to their pets if left behind.

  • Only about 17% of domestic violence shelters in the U.S. can accommodate pets, leaving many survivors with impossible choices.

We founded A Safe Haven For Paws, Inc. because we believe no survivor should have to choose between their safety and their beloved animal companion.

Who We Help

Our services are available to anyone in Northeast Nebraska who is escaping domestic violence and needs help caring for their pets during their journey to safety and stability. Whether it's a few nights of emergency boarding or help covering medical expenses, we're here to make sure survivors don't have to face this path alone—or without their pets.

How You Can Help

We’re just getting started, and your support is crucial. You can:

  • Donate: Every dollar helps provide care for a pet in need.

  • Foster: Open your home temporarily to an animal in transition.

  • Partner: Are you a vet clinic, shelter, or social service agency? Let’s collaborate.

  • Spread the word: Follow us on social media and share our mission.
